Character Information
Name: Mitsuru Kirijo
Canon: Persona 3: FES
Canon Point: Evening of 7/20 (Yakushima Trip)
Age: 18
History: Megaten Wiki Link.
As a quick summary:
Mitsuru's family, the Kirijo Group, continues the long standing Persona tradition of messing in things man was not meant to know, via gathering Shadows and running experiments. The results of those experiments causes the Dark Hour to appear.
Mitsuru herself is about four years old at the time of the experiments, and is implied to have been a part of the research. She was subjected to tests and procedures, and was forced to learn how to summon a Persona. This said, she doesn't successfully summon Penthesilea until around age eight.
After this, Mitsuru dedicates herself to fixing the mistakes of her family. She trains as a Persona user, and eventually finds allies in the form of fellow Persona users Akihiko Sanada and Shinjiro Aragaki, once everyone is in their teens. Together they form S.E.E.S. until a tragic accident pushes Shinjiro away from the group.
Mitsuru and Akihiko manage on their own with backing from the Kirijo Group, seeking out other Persona users so they can take the fight to the Shadows and make steps towards solving the Dark Hour.
Eventually this leads to the Kirijo Group recruiting an young boy by the name of Minato Arisato. Through various trials, Mitsuru appoints Minato as a field leader and supports him.
Progress is made in Mitsuru's goals... but Mitsuru herself neglects to mention some of the fine background details to the new recruits. One of them, Yukari Takeba, does some digging and finds out all of the above info. She confronts Mitsuru, and Mitsuru is forced to come clean about her family.
The group survives multiple shadow fights and exams, then celebrates by going to Yakushima Island. Mitsuru's family has a posh building on the island, and she meets with her father. He admonishes her about hiding things, and arranges for a meeting with the teens.
Where upon Mitsuru finds herself yanked across worlds and given the seeds of a monster transformation, because she cannot catch a break.
Personality:
At Mitsuru's current point in canon, she is a professional ice queen. Even with her family’s background of unleashing horrors on the world (and using their own heir as a Persona summoning test subject) Mitsuru is driven by the desire to live up to her family name. To be perfectly poised, formal, and in control at all times.
In her mind, she is a Kirijo first and Mitsuru second. Because of this, it’s second nature for Mitsuru to treat any worrisome, tense, or unfamiliar situation as a business deal. This gives Mitsuru the advantage of keeping her head clear and grants her a sense of stoicism and focus... But it also means she's carrying around a perfectionist streak and off-kilter people skills 24/7.
On that perfectionist front, Mitsuru is incredibly tough on herself. While she may scold her teammates, Mitsuru saves the harshest criticism for herself, and holds herself to high standards.
Personal matters such as worries, doubts, sadness, or anything resembling weakness are something she can do without. Mitsuru tends to censor what sort of emotions she can show; measured amounts of anger, carefully coached happiness and similar are fine, particularly if they enforce her sense of authority. But Mitsuru never goes to extremes, and restricts herself to only emotions she can control.
There's a noticeable gap between the cold badass front she wears for the world, and the more vulnerable and intimate emotional side she hides away. And since Mitsuru is unfamiliar with showing her emotions, it makes any instances where she has to act with her heart instead of her head VERY awkward for her. This causes a cycle where Mitsuru becomes more and more distant and aloof, since she doesn’t know how to express herself. When Mitsuru loses her mask of a professional business woman, she's at a loss of how to express herself without it.
Mitsuru does benefit from a few things; with her detached nature, she stays focused and clear headed in stressful situations. Combat is not something that panics her; neither are high threat or crisis situations. She can easily fit the strategist role, even if she has a preference for being on the field and dealing with things herself.
She can be something of a team mom as well, if a bit unorthodox. Mitsuru feels a sense of responsibility to those she takes under her wing. Even if she DOES have a tendency to enroll said people in summer classes to keep their grades up. Without telling them about it. But Mitsuru tries to look out for her allies, in her own way, and be a guiding figure for them to look to.
Since Mitsuru was trained to become a head of a giant business empire, she gravitates towards leadership and positions of authority. And she possesses ample confidence to back herself up.
...Meaning that anything that throws Mitsuru off her feet makes her a highly vulnerable, back peddling mess, who tries to get some distance; Mitsuru's need for control, calm, and composure can backfire on her, since any loss of those takes her out of her comfort zone. It also sends her scrambling to throw her cold front and emotional walls back up. She doesn't care on who she alienates with her detached attitude as maintaining her front of a professional is far more important to her.
There's a subdued note of pessimism, or at vey least, unflinching realism to Mitsuru's thoughts. She's the sort of person who plans for the worst, and only hopes for the best after she's made every contingency plan she can think of. She doesn't believe or trust very much in idealism.
And on that subject, trust and Mitsuru have an uneasy relationship. Mitsuru doesn't open to people easily, with her emotions OR her secrets. (In-game, she'll be VERY slow to form Bonds, and thus be at high risk for going feral.) She has few scruples over lying through omission, or simply not disclosing all the information she has. Mitsuru doesn't open up easily, whether it's with emotions or her own secrets. While Mitsuru does have a conscience, it's something she tends to shove aside; her moral compass may exist, but it has yet to stabilize all the way. For that matter, Mitsuru is very steadfast in believing the ends justify the means. She may regret those means, but only in her own private time. And perhaps after she's done the requisite planning and any homework she has.
Mitsuru is a study and workaholic. Down time and idleness are foreign concepts to her, and being without something to do can be deeply unsettling. While she enjoys fencing from time to time, academics are her true passion. Books are her main accessory, and any library is a second home for her.
When it comes to being a monster, Mitsuru is going to be in denial. She’ll see it as a flaw, as something that makes her less than an ideal heiress. So she’ll try to hide her changes, until there’s no way of obscuring them anymore, and they’re dragged into plain sight. Much like how she deals with most of her secrets, point of fact.
So to sum it all up? Mitsuru is a complicated ball of prestige, caution, smarts, and tops everything off by having the emotional finesse of an ice cube. She's a girl with a ton of aptitude and strengths, but some truly crippling psychological and emotional problems.
Abilities & Skills:
Supernaturally, Mitsuru is a Persona summoner with an affinity towards ice and a weakness to fire. She also has mild healing spells, and a memetic Marin Karin charm spell.
In terms of physical combat she also knows how to fence, and is skilled with a rapier.
And in skills, Mitsuru is a student with incredibly high marks at the top of her class. She is keen and observant, and has a sharp business sense. She’s fluent in Japanese, English, and French, and well studied in different cultures. She also knows basic ballroom dancing, high society etiquette, and the like.
Inventory/Companions:
Mitsuru is currently carrying a suitcase and SEES gear, which contains:
A swimsuit.
A SEES uniform.
An Evoker that doesn’t work.
A rapier.
And she’s wearing a very stylish summer outfit.
Choice: Naga, venomous type. I want to take some cues from the red-bellied black snake and mud snake with their gorgeous red and black scales, for appearance.
Reason: BECAUSE MONSTERS ARE AWESOME, AND SO ARE SNEKS. Going into detail, I think Naga would be a really cool choice for Mitsuru because it plays into her flaws AND her strengths.
First off, it’s a change that will become harder and harder for her to hide. The scales, tail, etc are all going to highlight how she’s changing, try as she might to pretend nothing is different and she’s still an ideal, human heiress.
Second, the game lore is fun; snek monsters are seen in-game as aristocrats and shrewd business owners, and Mitsuru is certainly that in demeanor, even if she’ll need to work on regaining wealth and influence.
Third, Mitsuru is coming from a canon point where she might have just a tiny little bit of doubt about herself, and her methods. She’s feeling a bit like a liar, and untrustworthy; given the symbolism of snakes with lying and deceiving (even though Naga themselves tend towards virtue!) her changes will put a lot of pressure on her self image. There’s also the alternate symbolism that snakes represent healing and rebirth; being forced to confront her changes and open up about her weaknesses might end up being beneficial for Mitsuru in the long run.
Last of all it tickles me that while Mitsuru getsto be a water-bender mild powers over water and some cool physical perks, she gets an increased sensitivity to cold. There’s something very entertaining about an ice queen suddenly being susceptible to actual ice.
